Security systems rarely fail all at once. A camera drifts out of position, a hard drive develops errors, a battery weakens. Nobody notices until the footage is needed. Regular preventive maintenance is how you catch it early.
Cameras
- Clean lenses and housings; dust and spider webs ruin night images.
- Check the view of every camera against the agreed position.
- Confirm night vision works and the time and date are correct on the footage.
Recorders and storage
- Check hard drive health and that recording goes back the agreed number of days.
- Apply firmware updates and review user accounts and passwords.
- Test that footage can actually be exported.
Access control
- Test each door, lock, exit button and emergency release.
- Remove users who have left the organisation.
- Check backup batteries in controllers and locks.
Power and network
- Test UPS batteries under load.
- Check surge protectors and earth connections.
- Review switch and network logs for errors.
A report you can act on
Each visit should end with a written report: what was checked, what was found, what was fixed and what needs a decision. That record is also useful evidence for insurers and auditors.
